Due to the nature of Essential Oils, caution and care should always be exercised when using them. Here are a few guidelines to help: - Always keep Essential Oils out of reach of children. Ensure that the Essential Oils you buy are fitted with dripper caps to ensure minimum consumption should a child attempt to consume them. If your child does swallow Essential Oil, take the container to the telephone and contact Poison Information immediately on 13 11 26. This is an Australia wide number available 24 hours a day.
- Never consume or use Essential Oils internally unless under the guidance of a qualified Natural Therapy Practitioner.
- Some essential oils are highly flammable, keep away from naked flame.
- Always read the cautions listed on the bottle or information sheet that accompanies your oils. Some essential oils have contra-indication (negative reactions) for certain injuries, illnesses or ailments. If you suffer from heart conditions, blood pressure conditions, immune deficiency, are undergoing cancer treatments, or have epilepsy please consult a health care professional before using Essential Oils. People with Asthma should avoid using the inhalation method.
- Essential Oils should never replace medications prescribed by your doctor. If in doubt please consult your doctor or health care provider.
- If you experience any symptoms while using essential oils, stop and seek medical advice.
- If you are on medication, please seek medical seek advice from a health care professional.
- Essential Oils should be avoided during pregnancy. Some essential oils, whilst having a positive effect on the mother can actually have a negative effect on the baby. In some cases, miscarriage or defect can result.
- If you have sensitive skin or are using essential oils for the first time, do a patch test on the inside of your arm. Combine one drop of essential oil to 2ml of carrier oil.
- Some essential oils are photo-toxic when exposed to UV rays from the sun or solariums. Avoid UV rays for 12 hours after application of these oils.
- Always use the recommended dosage as defined on the oil bottle and the information brochure that accompanies it. Over use can cause toxicity in the body that can cause nausea, vomiting and headaches.
- Always use the essential oils as recommended. Essential oils should always be diluted in carrier oil or base cream for use on the skin unless otherwise directed. Always avoid the eyes and other sensitive areas.
- Essential oils should be stored in a dark coloured glass bottle fitted with a dripper cap and the lid screwed on tightly. Store the oil in a cool, dark place preferably in an essential oil storage box.
- Essential oils should not come in contact with plastic or varnished or painted areas. If blended your own essential oil blend, use a glass container.
- Prevention is always better than cure so please contact your health care professional before using aromatherapy essential oils.
