Grades Of Essential Oils

How Are Essential Oils Graded?

When shopping for essential oils, is it important to understand the different grades of oils that are available.

In Australia, no governing body grades essential oils. Many sellers use terms like [100%] [Pure] [High Quality] [Premium] [Food Grade] [Therapeutic] [Commercial] and of course [Organic]

To provide a guarantee about an essential oil is almost impossible. Most are produced overseas and few suppliers will provide a written, binding guarantee of purity, species or physico-chemical data. There are many reasons growers won’t provide this level of detail and In some cases, where information is commercially sensitive, suppliers will not even provide information regarding origin.

Good sellers will generally categorise their oils into groups based on the method of production and resulting purity as known on purchase. Most reputable sellers will try purchase from trusted growers who supply crop, harvest and production authenication.

The Sydney Oil Company classifies Essential Oil products into categories and attributes star ratings.:

   ******     100% Pure Essential Oil – Certified Organic  – unsurpassed quality and aromatic vibrancy.
   *****       100% Pure Essential Oil – Conventional – genuine purity and true aromatic profile
   ****        100% Pure Essential Oil – Blended Origin – blended Pure Oil of same bot. name, varying origins.
   ****         Essential Oil – Blended Natural – 100% Pure, blended with natural constituents
   ***           Essential Oil – Premium Commercial – 100% Pure, naturally derived/nature identical ingredients
   *              Commercial Oil – 00% synthetic ingredient

While many practitioners stress the importance of buying essential oils that are botanically pure, where the suppler knows the botanical name, part of the plant used,  country of origin and the extraction process,  the question remains ~ is the only way to confirm this is to buy  Australian Certified Organic.
